I live in Colorado and will be storing them in my garage. Please advise. Thanks.
I bought too many tulip bulbs, can I save the extra for next year?
Tulips will not survive to be planted the next year. Even in the darkness of a garage they will sprout and look for the sunshine. See if you can sell them but other wise crowd them in with the others or put them in pots. I purchased, a couple of years ago the big bags of tulips that Costco sells. One was left in the refrigerator in the garage and discovered the following year in March sometime of this year. The bulbs had sprouted and dried out.
Reply:storing your bulbs in a cold place is perfectly fine .why dont you get a nice big tub and plant them on mass it would be beautiful
Reply:You CAN save them for next year, just wrap them in newspaper and put them into a box and store them in a dark corner of your garage. Don,t let light or moisture get to them and they will be absolutely fine !!! Your tulips that are already planted will reproduce year after year, you can thin them out by digging them up in the fall before the first freeze and do the same thing. You don't want to dig them up too soon, you want them to start their dormant cycle. I live in northern Indiana and do this year after year.
Reply:depends probubly not
Reply:Sure you can store them... Just put them in the ground outside somewhere, then next year you can dig them up, divide them up, then replant them, or give them to your friends and neighbors... It you leave them out of the ground, even in cold storage, they probably won't make it to a 2nd season...
Reply:Can you buy TOO many? I would just put them all in a nice big planting bed. You will have something really beautiful to look at when they all bloom.
Reply:Store them in the crisper section of your refrigerator.
About the time those planted outdoors come up, plant them into a pot, remembering to keep them well-watered and in full sun.
You do know about bone-meal don't you? Makes for huger blooms.
Reply:It is possible to save your extra tulip bulbs. Store them in a dark, cool and dry place that is well ventillated. Make sure the temperature is constant. Also, make sure they are not exposed to moisture or they may start to mold.
Some varieties of bulbs are susceptible to drying out. If you want to prevent this, you can store them in a pot or a bag of peat-dust or sand until you are ready to plant them. Spread them out in single layers and so that they aren't touching (ie. layer of bulbs, layer of sand, layer of bulbs, layer of sand).
Hope that helps.
