What's the real name for a tulip tree?

We have these trees around the neighborhood, and everyone just calls them tulip trees. They get these huge beautiful blooms that look like giant tulips in the Spring. I know its asking a bit much given my description, but does anyone know what kind of tree this really is?

What's the real name for a tulip tree?
With yellow blooms or pink?

Yellow poplar is the common tulip tree found in the east and south.

The pink tulip tree is a saucer magnolia.
Reply:Hi! Because you are using a common name, there are always regional differences and personal preferences, therefore the confusion in terms. The previous answerer describes this very well. The scientific name is Liriodendron tulipifera. They are the common cove tree here in my neighborhood. Here they are often called "Poplar" , "Yellow Poplar", and lastly, "Tulip Tree".

Edit: If your flowers are pink then it is not what is known around here as "Tulip tree". Likely it is what I know as the "Saucer Magnolia", Magnolia soulangiana.
Reply:The common selling name is Japanese Magnolia.
