I don't use my backyard. There's a cherry blosson tree and a patch of rectangular soil surrounded by a pebble and stone barrier in it. My dog uses this rectangular patch of soil to "go" and then we clean it up (kind of like a big outdoor litter box).
A week ago a yellow tulip appeared in this rectangular patch of soil. I didn't plant it, neither did my mom, or my dad. My backyard is surrounded by a ten foot picket fence, so I don't think anyone climbed over it to put it there. Also, they wouldn't have made it far before my dog (German-shepherd/husky) would have attacked them.
How did this happen?
Why did a yellow tulip appear in my backyard when I did not plant it?
I don't think the bird pooping answers are logical...tulips come from bulbs.
I think more along the lines of the squirrel digging it up
or someone else planting it there before you
how long have you lived there?
Reply:It's possible that the bulb was left over from someone else's planting in the past and just now had the right conditions to grow. I don't think a bird pooped a tulip bulb. Unless it was Big Bird...lol
Reply:Maybe a squirrel buried it there (last year). Or maybe it was there but needed more than a couple years or more to bloom again since it was either malnourished (bad location) or getting broken off early each prior year.
Reply:I would say a squirrell dug it up and buried it there for winter food.
Reply:Because beautiful things find beautiful people.
Reply:Squirrels will eat tulips - it is possible that one dug up a tulip bulb that someone had set out to plant and stored it away your backyard
Reply:the answer is probably a squirrel for dug it up from somewhere else and buried it to keep for a snack later on but forgot about it.
My neighbours have received a few of my tulips that way!!!
Reply:maybe a bird dropped the seed/bulb there, or some other animal like a squirrel.
Reply:when a bird eats a seed it may not brake down.
so when the poo they can poo a seed.
so that mite how the tulip got there.

Can I plant my tulip bulbs this spring instead of in the fall?
I bought some tulip bulbs at a huge discount last Nov. They've been sitting in my basement ever since. They look fine. Can I plant them now? Will they survive? Or if not, can I keep them in my basment for 8 more months? Thanks.
Can I plant my tulip bulbs this spring instead of in the fall?
I would plant them now. Fertilize and take care of like you normally would. They should put up foliage. This should allow them to store energy again for next years bloom. Also they should put out a lot of roots and get well established.
Reply:i bought potted tulips before easter and they died on me. my mom says the bulbs are still living. i'm going to plant them outside later on this year. but not sure when. i'd think like any plant they would prefer the warmer temps. i live in Michigan so it gets cold here. just now starting to warm up to 40s and 50s. but have them from me though. and my mom says just wait for theirs to come up.
Reply:yes u can plant them in the spring.i did %26amp; mine came up the next spring.
Reply:Plant them now...they will sprout leaves and may flower. they may have difficulty naturalizing, and you may not get much flower next spring. However, if you leave them in the basement until next fall they are likely to dry out or rot.

Does the amount of humidity affect the growth of tulip plants?
I already asked a question earlier about the same as this, but I needed to specify. Does the amount (A lot, Little, None) of humidity in the air affect the growth of a tulip plant largely? Any links would be helpful...
Does the amount of humidity affect the growth of tulip plants?
tulips will wilt in a humid or hot weather, they need a cool climate to grow.So the tulips harvested each year gets lesser and lesser, but the price of a tulip gets higher a higher. probably $10000 for 1( a joke )
Reply:OMG!! i did this project for science fair!!
more specifically, my question thing was "how cna a simulated weather condition affect the growth of a plant?" i used a bulb plant, the amyrillis minerva (no tulips in home depot). the results were waht i'd expected.
bulb #1 was put in the freezer. i watered it according to the snowfal of my hometown, edison, new jersey because snow melts and stuff.
bulb #2 was left at room temperature and watered according to when the soil was dry at the surface, about once a week because my project was done in decmber. there's limited humidity in my house.
bulb #3 was put in the laundry room. it gets really warm in there cuz of the washer and dryer's constant use. i calculated the humidity and found it to be only 3%.
the results?
bulb #1 never bloomed until after i took it out the freezer and spring came. (i live in the panhandle) this took about two months
bulb #2 also bloomed in spring, only slightly earlier than #1. i kept it inside my house.
bulb # 3 bloomed before its sisters. i saw its flower in january.

The family Asteraceae or, alternatively, Compositae, known as the aster, daisy or sunflower family, is a taxon of dicotyledonous flowering plants. The family name is derived from the genus Aster and refers to the star-shaped flower head of its members, epitomized well by the daisy. The Asteraceae is the second largest family in the Division Magnoliophyta, with some 1,100 genera (See List) and over 20,000 recognized species. Only the orchid family (Orchidaceae) is larger, with about 25,000 described species.

The Pansy or Pansy Violet is a cultivated garden flower. It is derived from the wildflower called the Heartsease or Johnny Jump Up (Viola tricolor), and is sometimes given the subspecies name Viola tricolor hortensis. However, many garden varieties are hybrids and are referred to as Viola × wittrockiana. The name "pansy" also appears as part of the common name of a number of wild flowers belonging, like the cultivated Pansy, to the violet genus Viola. One or two unrelated flowers such as the Pansy Monkeyflower also have "pansy" in their name.

Can you reuse Tulip Bulbs?
My mom bought a Tulip and the flower is gone, the petals fell off and it basically died. But only the flower part. The rest of the plant is fine. The stalk is really green and strong. Is the whole plant done? Will it grow any more flowers of should I throw it away? My mom wants to replant the bulb but I want to use the pot she's going to plant it in for some herbs.
Can you reuse Tulip Bulbs?
Depending upon where you live, your mom can plant the bulb in the ground. It doesn't have to be planted in the same pot. It won't bloom again for a year, so why waste the pot? If she doesn't want to plant it now, she can store it and plant it in November, to bloom again next spring.
I live in California and leave mine in the ground all year. When I buy new ones, I put them in the refrigerator for 6 weeks to give them the cold treatment that they need.
I just moved to California from Holland, the tulip capital of the world. I have tulips everywhere, and love them. Tell your mom to go ahead and plant the tulip in the ground now, and enjoy it again next year. She can get more info on the websites concerning tulips/gardening.
Reply:They bloom once per year - the green is helping the plant store energy in the bulb for the next year.
Reply:you don't say where you live, but these directions are for where there are winters. (cold to moderate climates)
cut off the top of the stem so that no seeds will form, (that sucks energy from the bulb. DO NOT cut off the green part; let the green part turn yellow or brown, the bulb needs the nutrients for next year's bloom. The tulip bulb will then go "dormant" and it's then safe to cut off the old stem and leaves. you can leave a little stub if you want to.
From there, you can just leave the tulip in the pot and don't water it as it's now dormant, and it will be until it starts to grow again around February or March. then you can plant it in fall in a new pot with fresh dirt, or in the ground.
Or, you can take it out of the pot altogether once it's dormant, and store it in a paper bag. plant it in the ground or in a pot in the fall (October/November) depending on where you live. If you forget to plant it then, put it in your fridge crisper drawer for at least 6 weeks until you can plant it out. Give it some bone meal when it starts to grow.
Reply:Let it dry in a dark basement. after a dormant period replant and it will come up again
Reply:The stalk is gathering energy and storing it into the bulb for a flower for next year. You only get one tulip flower from a bulb, which is why they are so special. You can plant it in a sunny location, so the leaves get a lot of energy to store and give it some fertalizer for bulbs and it should die and then come up again and flower next spring. Then, if everything goes well, you'll have the tulip come up again every spring and bloom.
Reply:if u get good i give u a job planting 2lips
Reply:The stalk will disappear too. Tulips bloom once per year; normally in the Spring unless greenhouse grown. They will bloom again each Spring. Plants that come back every year are perennials. The plant goes dormant or rests usually over winter %26amp; where it is cool/cold Replant the bulb outside. Usually twice as deep as the size of the seed (in this case, bulb). Tulips normally are to be planted deeper than that.

Will anyone be going to the Skagit Tulip Festival this month?
It was my brother's birthday yesterday but he doesn't like it, he's concious that he's getting older. So I sent him an e-card without the words 'Happy Birthday' on it at all. However, I needed a reason to be sending the card - even though we both knew why I was - and did a search for Festivals on 1st April. I can't use the April Fool thing; we're both in our forties; I've done that one to death.
I found the Skagit Tulip Festival (60 miles from Vancouver in one direction and 60 miles from Seattle in another apparently) and used that in the poem I wrote to go on the card.
I was just wondering if anyone had actually been or planned on going.
Will anyone be going to the Skagit Tulip Festival this month?
I love the Skagit Valley and the Tulip Festival and yes, I've been even though I lived in Seattle at the time. The Northwest part of Washington State has numerous pockets of Dutch residents who are first and second generation Americans. My own mother was born and raised in Lynden, Washington, which is right near the border of Canada and Washington and is as Dutch as you can get. A tulip festival amongst the Dutch is like highland games for the American Scottish.
In my opinion, your card was very clever.
Happy belated Tulip Festival to your brother!
Reply:Yes, I'll be going. I live in Issaquah, Washington, just slightly east of Seattle. I'm a relative newcomer to Washington, and by the time I knew about the festival last year, it was over! I don't want to miss it this year, so I'm hoping to go within the next week or so. I'm including their web site, below.
In response to the first "answerer," who didn't answer a thing, the Skagit River Valley is most definitely "near" by our standards, and by my own. Sixty miles is only an hour or so away by interstate highway, and Seattle and Vancouver, BC, are excellent reference points for those not familiar with Washington state. Having grown up in Texas, I think the entire state of Washington is pretty small, as it could easily be tucked into the eastern half of Texas! No complaints, though - I love living in Washington.
A belated Happy Birthday to your brother!
Reply:I went to the tulip vestval several years ago. It is very beautiful. We spent the day going from farm to farm. Although it's mainly tulips, many farms have daffidols and irises as well.
The sights were wonderful, the weather nice, but my allergies were killing me by the time we made it to the 2nd or 3rd field!
Next year you can send him a card celebrating the Pierce County Daffidol Festival. My sister was her school's Daffidol princess.http://www.daffodilfestival.net/

Is a TULIP a sterile flower ?
a flower normaly gives a fruit, but how about a tulip flower ?
Is a TULIP a sterile flower ?
No. Tulips are not sterile in general. A specific tulip hybrid may be, however, it's through cross-fertilization between different varieties that we get so many different other varieties.
There's no guarantee however, even if you get seeds from a tulip, that it will resemble the parent.

We're going to the Skagit Tulip Festival this wknd. Any must-sees/must-dos with our 2-yr-old son?
The Tulip Festival's website has about 30 different points of interest on their map -- way too many choices for us especially with our active little guy in tow. If anyone has suggestions on where to start (or where to exit to begin our exploration), I'd appreciate it!

All it takes for evil to flourish------is for good men to do-----nothing.
Reply:Try taking Highway 20 west from I-5 (exit 230). This will point you towards Anacortes. You'll find lots of Tulip farms in view, and simply head their direction (follow the listed map).
Continuing on towards Anacortes, highway 20 will bring to Whidbey Island. A trip that direction brings you to many beaches, and the old fortifications that are fun to explore. not to mention seeing Deception Pass.
I love the Tulip Festival. I went to college in the area, and spent some years doing field work all over Whidbey, and the Skagit Valley.
If I didn't call Alaska home, I would return to the Skagit.

How do you pot a bloomed tulip.?
I received a tulip from someone's gardern. He potted it with the soil from his garden in a cup. Now, I want to pot it until the fall.
How do you pot a bloomed tulip.?
is it done blooming? Then you let it die off and you put the bulb in a brown paper bag in your refrigerator for a while. Plant it in the fall to bloom in the spring. They need a period of cool dormancy to bloom again.
Reply:you,d be better off planting it right after it blooms that way there wno,t be any delay of bulb development for next spring bloom

Whats wrong with the u in tulip?
The "u" in the acrostic "tulip", traditional 5 point Calvinists hold to means unconditional election. See any problems with it? 10 points to the best answer.
Whats wrong with the u in tulip?
There are problems with all five letters, not just the 'u.' Are you more interested in the philsophical, theological or Scriptural problems?
The best refutation of the 'u' is to refute the others. Unconditional election is the logical result of Total Depravity and Irresistible Grace, both of which are completely unbiblical.
Calvinism is based on an ancient heresy called Monenergism, which maintained (among other things) that Jesus Christ had only a single will (in common with the Father). This doctrine implies that man has no free will, because the Incarnate Christ had no free will. In other words, the will of man was destroyed in the Fall, leaving human beings incapable of choosing good from evil. Scripture refutes this view by pointing out that Jesus had a human will, and that human beings are capable of submitting their own wills to God.
Here is a start:
Dueteronomy 30:19
"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live." (The choice of life and death in the hands of man)
Isaiah 45:7-9
"I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it. Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?"
Matthew 23:37
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing." (God's will depends on the will of man)
Matthew 24:9-13
"Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved." (Some can fall away of their own accord)
Matthew 25:41
"Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." (Hell prepared for the devil, not for man)
Mark 16:15-16

Luke 8:13
"They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away." (Some fall away of their own accord)
Mark 4:16

John 6:70-71
"Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve." (Even the chosen can fall away)
John 7:17
17 If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. (Any man is capable of willing and doing what Christ commands)
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide [continue] in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide [continue] in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide [continue] in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth [continues] in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide [remains] not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide [continue] in me, and my words abide [continue] in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." (Former 'branches' can be cut away)

Ezekiel 18:
"Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right... he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD... Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like... he shall surely live...
"But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live? But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal.

Can I buy tulip plants or tulip bulbs in HONGKONG?
Is there any plant nursery in HONGKONG where I can buy plants and bulbs, particularly TULIP Plants and bulbs? thanks
Can I buy tulip plants or tulip bulbs in HONGKONG?
yes, the market in mong kok is indeed the place to look for tulips. however, it will depend on the season if you will be find them. since it's going on to summer by now there, it's not likely that you will find them this time of the year.
at the flower market you can buy by bunch or bouquet, but you can also buy by bulb or pot. i would suggest looking at the different shops there, you'll find lots of beautiful flowers, plants and arrangements. the whole market covers two blocks that have stores all around the whole two blocks. there are also bake shops, a convenience store, shoe shop and uniform shop. the bird market is near as well.

How and when can we replant tulip bulbs for next year?
I got the tulip bulbs for valentine and would love to see it flowering again next year
How and when can we replant tulip bulbs for next year?
You can plant the bulbs when the ground is not frozen however, do not expect any tulips this year. It is best to plant bulbs in the Fall. Bulbs should be dormant when planted. If you have live tulips right now, allow them to finish their blooming and completely die back. Once the live bulbs become dormant, store in a cool place and plant in the fall.

Yellow poplar tree / Tulip tree not blooming?
I have a Tulip Tree that has never bloomed. Is it true that you need 2 trees to get the "tulip" blooms? My tree is only 4 years old...so I'm wondering if it is just not mature enough.
Yellow poplar tree / Tulip tree not blooming?
It will be a few years before it blooms; it is too young. You don't need 2 trees.
Reply:It's still a baby. Give it time.

Tulip bulbs?
I need to know if someone can tell me in detail how to grow mature tulip bulbs.
Tulip bulbs?
Plant them pointy side up, in a hole about 2x as deep as the bulb is long. They need to be planted in fall, because they need to chill to bloom in spring. I put some hot pepper on them to try to keep squirrels from eating them. You can also "force" them by putting them in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks -- this trick them into thinking that winter is over, and then they will grow and bloom indoors in the winter. Lots of people add bone meal into the hole, or there are special bulb fertalizers. make sure that the bulbs are several inches apart (if they touch, the might rot).
Reply:PLANT THEM IN GOOD SOIL..PLANT THEM BEFORE THE FIRST FREEZE OF WINTER AND THEY WILL BLOOM INLATE APRIL OR EARLY MAY
Reply:Its not hard. You can plant them now. About 6 or 8 inches deep in nice organicly amended loam soil.
Fertilize them like any plant. Let them bloom and leave the leaves to grow and die back on their own.
Some hybrid tulips do not last for many years. Some do really well.

How can I make my tulip bulbs regrow?
I have tulip bulbs in a glass container inside my house. They just finished blooming and were beautiful. I was under the impression that I could cut them down to make them grow back up again ... but since they aren't planted in dirt, I'm unsure about how to proceed. Will the bulbs resprout and bloom again?
How can I make my tulip bulbs regrow?
Geiko is right but I would also add that if you put them into soil which they need for feeding you will want to cut them back after the green turns to yellow so they can also reserve energy. They can't just keep regrowing in water alone.
Reply:You can't cut them back.
That's the main trick with bulbs, they take the energy and nutrients from the plant before it whithers away to store it up till the next bloom.
If you cut it back, it won't be able to bloom.
Also, wherever you live, they need a cold spell in between. So if you're in a warm climate, put them in the fridge for the winter.
Reply:If the bulbs have given you the pleasure of their beautiful blooms, they have done their duty for one season, now is time they need to rest ,as suggested putting in soil is best so that the bulbs which are really store houses of energy for the next season ,can fill up on energy %26amp; nutrients, besides they will be ready for you when the season comes along,

How & when to transplant a Tulip tree: South Florida - Zone 9?
There is a two foot Tulip tree growing wild in my back yard which I would like to transplant to a more appropriate location. Does anyone out there know how I can safely do this and when would be the best time. I live in South Florida. Any help greatly appreciated
How %26amp; when to transplant a Tulip tree: South Florida - Zone 9?
Wait until the fall, or in the spring- do not transplant in the summer- unless it is a cool/overcast day and you can water the transplant regularly (2-3 times/week) for the first few weeks.
When you do move it, dig as much of the soil around the transplant as possible, and move it all intact to the desired location. Because it is a transplant, I wouldn't fertilize it for the first few weeks for fear of fertilizer burn, save compost that is mixed with the soil around the new hole. Mulch the transplant and water regularly. After a few weeks, you can add some potassium to the soil to help stimulate root production, or a good all purpose fertilizer.
Tulip tress (Liriodendrum) can do well in full-sun or part-shade, but remember they can grow up to 100 feet with an 80' wide canopy- so be sure to put it somewhere it can be encouraged to grow to full size.
Also, if there is a tulip tree nearby that it first originated from, take some soil samples from around the drip line and create a slurry (add lots of water to all of the soil) so that it is kind of watery, substitute one of your waterings with the slurry mixture. Many trees rely on microrhyzae (specie-specific micro-organisms that live in the soil) for better growth. Replace the soil samples with a topsoil/compost mix.
Enjoy!

When is the Skagit Valley tulip Festival going to be in 2008?
Anyone know when is the tulip festival going to held in 2008? anyone know the date? thank you so much
When is the Skagit Valley tulip Festival going to be in 2008?
It's the entire month of April every year - http://www.tulipfestival.org/ This year's info isn't up yet but that's the site that will give the schedule of events.
Reply:Contact the chamber of commerce for Mount Vernon. They should have the information for you.
Reply:There is something going on every weekend in April. I lived in that area for several years and here are a few tips. Don't stop in the middle of the road and block traffic. Remember that the locals still have to get to and from work and stopping traffic causes people to be late. Don't trample the flowers by going out in the fields. These flowers are the livelihood of Skagit county and trampling them causes them to lose money. Use proper manners when dealing with the locals. They may need your business, but there is no need to act like you are doing them a favor and be snotty.

If I cut off a tulip bud before it opens with it then open in water?
last year i lost a whole row of tulip buds to the squirls or maybe it was a rabbit? The buds all came up and were about 2 days from opening and then they were all chopped off at the head. Some thing must really like the sweet flowers.
If I cut off a tulip bud before it opens with it then open in water?
Your flowers should open if cut and put in water. Try getting a can of cayenne pepper to spread around your tulips. Just by chance it may chase the critters away.
Also, if you are familiar with the tiny garlic tops that grow on garlic, plant them in between your flowers. This may help defer some types of bugs.
Reply:put coffee grounds around them - animals don't like it and the flowers love it
Reply:They should open for you if they are fully developed and colored. I put little circular cages around my tulips to protect them from rabbits, but if the deer come by, I am out of luck.

good luck and lots of fun i must warn you it's easter weekend and it will be very very crowded but it's worth it, i am going myself got some free tickets.
Reply:I also went from Leiden in the bus that was going to Keukenhof, just like the dutchcutie explained. It was great and lovely! Good luck!
Reply:Dutchcutie has it correct. Train to Leiden and then the 54 bus to the park. I love the Keukenhof, wish I was going with you.
looking forward to ur timely reply,

How do I care for tulip bulbs after the flowers die?
I have some tulip bulbs in a glass vase. There is no soil in the vase, just some plastic spikes the bulbs sit on and there is water up to the roots. There were no care instructions included, so I'm wondering how to care for the bulbs so they grow again.
How do I care for tulip bulbs after the flowers die?
actually i have the same thing with the spikes lol ... actually u can grow them again .. just cut off all the roots make a nice clean bulb again and it will sprout .. all you need is some loop warm water and a place in the sun ... also what i did was put some dark paper around the bottom of the vase since roots dont like light at all.. also maybe use a very little bit of some organic plant food i bet they are hungry lol
(i bought mine at costco lol )
p.s make sure your water line does not go over the bulb, just let in touch the bottom of the bulb untill u see roots hanging then u can lower the water level
Reply:they probobly won't bloom again. the bolbs were forced to bloom and it sucks all the energy out of them. IF you want to try take them out of the pot cut off the stems close to the bulb dry for several days then store in a cool dry dark place till spring.Plant a see what happens.
Reply:if there rooting allready place then in some dirt inside till spring frost is over then plant out doors. if the have not started new roots yet just plant in the out doors about 6 inches deep
Reply:put them in soil and feed them with plant food wait 6 weeks till leaves die down naturally cos this feeds the bulbs or they wont flower next year then snip off the leaves and put out in garden they will come up again next year you will need the soil to get moist in between now and next spring when they flower
Reply:Turtle lover has the right idea. Don't expect them to bloom again this Spring. With luck they will produce new foliage this year. This year's new foliage will feed the bulb for a bloom next year.

Tulip tree bud?
I have a couple snippets off of a tulip tree, just a few buds that haven't flowered yet. Can I plant the buds and will they grow to a tree? Or can I put the end of the piece of branch with buds into water and will it grow or blossom? I know you can do this with some plants like pussy willows and bamboo.
Tulip tree bud?
Hello, not really sure. But if I am not mistaken rhododendrons are started by planting buds. Check with freeplants.com they have a garden question area.
If you put the buds in water, consider hanging on to the dead flowers for a while, just to see if the dead flowers develop tulip tree seeds. Rose of Sharon seeds are found in the dead flowers.
Reply:this isn't really an answer, but a notification.
tulip tree flowers let out these little pointy seeds, and when going barefoot, it hurts a lot when stepping on them. Trust me, it's from personal experience
Reply:Flower buds can not be propagated as you propose, and unfortunately, tulip tree does not propagate well vegetatively, except from stump sprouts. http://www.na.fs.fed.us/pubs/silvics_man...

Are there still any more tulip fields at this time in Netherlands?
Planning for a bicycle tour in the tulip fields
Are there still any more tulip fields at this time in Netherlands?
hhmmmm sorry , but you are really too late, it's all bloomed out but you can still enjoy the country with out it, you will find it so relaxing that we have great biking routes and don't have to share the road with cars hahahaha
enjoy your trip
Reply:i did that! it was mid april of this year, i went to Keukenhof and bicycled around the tulip fields, was amazingly beautiful, but i think the tulips came early this year, so the season is now over. Would definitely recommend you doing it next year though!
Reply:I'm sorry for you! the tulips period is finished!
Reply:forget it! no more tulips left in the field during this time! you'r about 1 month too late!
Reply:I am afraid you are a little late, but, next time you go, try Kuekenhoff. Not sure of spelling. In Holland.
It's the most Beautiful area I have ever seen.
Reply:You will definitely want to check out Haarlem. That's the epicenter of current tulip production (it's also quite flat - not sure that's a good thing or bad thing for your bike trip). Have a look at the follwoing link:

What is the current Ottawa tulip bloom index (20080428)?
I'm planning to visit Ottawa to see the tulips during the weekend May 3/4 (Tulip festival). What is the bloom index now? Will I see any tulips? When will be the best time for me to go?
Thanks
What is the current Ottawa tulip bloom index (20080428)?
Tulips are starting to bloom now, and preperations are being made for the festival..it all looks good for your weekend as the weather forcast is calling for Sun and 20degree Celcius weather.
The afternoons are the best times for full bloom, but you'll also get the crowds of people..
Enjoy!
Reply:what they said ^, only thing is that I think it's supposed to rain for the next few days? I checked both yahoo and weather network and it looks pretty dismal and a little cold for the next week :s

How long does a tulip bloom last?
I'd like to know-- how long does a tulip's bloom last on average?
How long does a tulip bloom last?
This will depend on two factors: first, the type of climate where you live and two, how quickly the flower is pollinated. We live in Southern NM and some springs are very mild, the bees aren't too active and our tulips will last two or three weeks. During warmer springs or when the bees are very active, our blooms will only last a week, maybe week and a half.
Reply:for cut flowers, no more than 4-5 days(and that's if you bought them tight)
for the ones on the ground, they usually last a week or two.
Reply:A few days.....or sometimes a week or so....it depends on if you talking about a cut flower or one that grows in the garden.

How do you start tulip tree seeds?
I have some tulip tree seeds obtained from a tree in Indiana. They are sort of similar to the "helicopter" seeds from a maple tree, but VERY VERY hard. How do I start them. Do I somehow removed the outer casing, or just soak the whole thing in water or moist dirt or ???? I don't see how the seed can sprout through that hard casing. Anyone who has done this, please reply. Also, how fast do these grow? How long before first flowers? Thanks any and all.
How do you start tulip tree seeds?
Hi Grumpy -
I believe that Tulip Tree seeds (and their 'winged' nature) are going to go beyond just soaking. Now is a good time to plant the seeds - but, you are coming close to the end of the season because the seeds require some cold period (such as some flower bulbs) in order to germinate.
Tulip Tree (Liriodendrum sp) is not difficult to germinate - but, the amount of seeds (viability as we call it) in these species is low - so, you will not get a seedling for every seed which you plant. You should remove and break open the wing like structures on each seed. Then, store them in the refridge for about 2-3 months (the reason I said now may be good to plant is because it is still cold out - and this may 'mimic' the natural cold season better than if you were to plant them during the Summertime).
Plant them indoors in sterile potting soils (which you can buy at a nursery - or mix half peat and half vermiculite also at your nursery/hardware store). Then, wrap the entire contraption up in a plastic bag - soil, pot, and broken and refridged up seeds - and wait about 6-10 weeks for germination. Once they germinate, open up holes in the plastic 'greenhouse' to allow air to come in and not to promote fungus. As they get larger, remove the plastic all together and start to expose them to outdoor conditions very slowly -- have your patience ready because it will probably be 2-3 years before you have something which you can begin to plant outdoors as young trees, etc.
I love these trees - just feel comfortable breaking up the winged seeds, refridge to keep them in a cold spell, then plant and wait.
Great luck to you - and dont be so grumpy! :)
Chris
Reply:You're welcome; its great to hear my answers get appreciated. Just try to work thru breaking the wings and remember that the # of seedlings u get will be low after you give them the needed cold period. Report It
Reply:place seeds in a cup with wet paper towel on the bottom dont let the towel dry out it should germinate

On favorable sites the success of regeneration can usually be determined by the size and vigor of the seedlings at the end of the third year. Height growth during the first year ranges from a few centimeters to more than 0.3 m (1 ft) on the best sites. With full light, rapid height growth begins the second year, and at the end of 5 years trees may be 3 to 5.5 in (10 to 18 ft) tall. During its seedling and sapling stages, yellow-poplar is capable of making extremely rapid growth. An 11-year-old natural seedling 15.2 m (50 ft) tall has been recorded.

-I just picked up one already 3 inches tall from the ground. Yes, the seeds you have might not even grow. In my front yard, I have 3 Tulip Trees that are stuck together at the base which are 2.5feet thick each and 100 feet tall. Only God knows how many seeds fall from that tree/trees, but in my whole front yard, I might find 3 or 4 shoots a year.
In my back yard is a much smaller Tulip Tree 40-45feet tall, it rarely produces flowers. It produced flowers 2 years ago, then early last year didn't, and then mid to late last year the leafs fell off very early and then leaves grew back on the bottom branches. Right now the tree in my front yard is starting to produce leaves everywhere, even the small 1foot tall one I have in a pot is, but the one in the back almost seems dead, maybe it's just too early to tell. THE THING IS that there are 4 large PINE TREES 100 FEET TALL within 10-15 of it. The giant one in the front yard has no trees around it for 50-100 feet. SO, what I'm trying to say is when you are finally able to grow it and plant it, DON'T PUT IT NEXT TO ANY TREE OR ANYTHING FOR 50FEET.
THE AVERAGE HEIGHT FOR A FULL GROWN TULIP TREE IS 100-150 FEET, some old ones have grown nearly 250FEET.

I want to plant some tulip bulbs in a pot for inside the house but do not know how to store them until I am ready to plant them.
How do I store tulip bulbs until I am ready to plant them?
I keep them in my produce bin in the refrigerator, but if you do, don't keep apples by them because of a toxic gas apples put off to bulbs.
Reply:They should be kept cool and dry, perhaps in a bag with holes in it or an onion sack; or even in a pair of tights or pantyhose.
Reply:Keep bulbs in cold, 37 degree F to 42 degree F.
Not too dry room. They need cold for six weeks.
Garage or garden shed, if water does not freeze in there,
is good place to store tulip, lili or other " cold " bulbs.
Reply:I keep mine outside in the cold. If you use a free plastic container (i.e. milk carton, tea bottle) that's been discarded clean it first, leave the lid off, put a few small air holes around the sides, put some dirt inside, then the bulbs, cover w/more dirt. The dirt keeps them from absolute frost bit and the cold air preserves the bulbs until it time to plant them in the Spring.
Reply:i have been told to store them in a closed paper sack.

How close may a tulip poplar be to a house and still avoid root damage to the slab foundation?
Our 10-year-old, 30' tulip poplar tree was about 16 feet away until we added on to the back of our house. Now it's only about 6 feet away. It's beautiful and provides great shade where it is really needed. We don't want to cut it down if it poses no threat to our foundation.
How close may a tulip poplar be to a house and still avoid root damage to the slab foundation?
Most residential warranty companies use the canopy of the full-grown tree as the minimum distance from the home. For example, if a Oak tree has a canopy of 40 feet diameter when it is fully grown, then the trunk of the tree is to be a minimum of 20 feet away. That is a typical example.
If you are fond of your tree, then consider getting bid for installing a "root sheild." As such a trench will be dug about 6 feet down and around 20 feet long near the exposed part of the house. Concrete will be placed in the trench along with steel reinforcing.
The only problem with that is that often the roots that are removed for the trench will wind up killing the tree anyway.
Sorry, but this will not be an easy decision. Were it mine to make, the tree would probably go.
Reply:Depending on the soil composition, construction may have caused serious damage to the tree's root system - tulip trees have big squishy, fleshy roots which are easily damaged.
You might not see any damage to the house, but that tree is only going to get bigger. Unless the tree is a fastigiate form [I will assume it isn't given that you say it gives great shading], roots won't be the only issue - the branches alone can get out beyond that six feet and cause damage of their own.
In my experience, having substantial trees that close to a building tends never to turn out well unless their growth is being artificially restrained using underground membranes or the like.
I would recommend having a chat with a local tree surgeon - he would be far better able to assess any potential trouble.

My tulip flower died, but leaves still green. Can I re pot them and they still live?
I have a potted tulip plant. Flowers died but leaves still green. Can I repot them?
Sure you can. It would be wasted effort on your part, though. Tulips only bloom once per year. It would be better (as suggested) to put them in the ground.
Reply:You should take them outside and plant them around 4-6 inches deep. Cut the flower and flower stem off but do not cut the leaves off. This is their food for the year. Water them along with all of your other plants. When the leaves turn brown and yellow, cut them off. Keep watering them as usual. Next spring, when they start growing again, give them a shot of fertilizer. Digging some bone meal around the sides a few inches deep will help also. Come next spring they will flower again. Possibly a few babies with them.
Reply:No, but if you live where the winters aren't too cold you can plant them in the ground outside, Don't cut the leaves off, plant deep and you may get tulips next year. Feed well in the autumn and protect from squirrels. (I use moth balls in and around plantings)

For anyone who grow tulip and poppy??
I need to know how much water I need to grow tulip and poppy seeds. Thank you!!!
For anyone who grow tulip and poppy??
Poopies don't need much water, once established. Growing them from seed can be tricky though. Keep the soil moist untill they are small plants.
Tulips, you plant bulbs for. Plant the large end down, tip up, about 6 inches down, in the fall. You don't need to water them at all. Ignore them and they'll come up.
How well they do will depend on your climate, and if they like it.

What would eat green tulip leaves?
We planted a whole lot of tulip bulbs last year and something is eating the leaves. How do we detere it?
What would eat green tulip leaves?
Bunnies and deer and an occasional squirrel!
There is a product that smells of rotten eggs called DEER OFF. You must apply it after every rain or watering, but if you do a good job it works the critters will not touch your bulbs.
I have heard that DRY BLOOD. It is a nutrient for bulbs that you can buy in a garden shop will be offensive to animals also.
Reply:Yes, it is deer. Try putting shavings of the bar soap Irish Spring around the plants. My parents have done this for years and have had great success.
Reply:Deer--they adore tulips. It is difficult to deter.I gave up,and plant daffodils now instead--they hate daffs.
Reply:use bug spray or if its an animal, put a small fence around them
Reply:Its probably deer. To deter them there are lots of products that repel deer. Most of them stink to high heaven. Personally I use fox urine because its the most natural. You can buy this at a local sporting good store that sells hunting supplies.

How close may a tulip poplar be to a house and not pose the threat of root damage to the slab foundation?
Our 10-year-old, 30' tulip poplar tree was about 16 feet away until we added on to the back of our house. Now it's only about 6 feet away. It's beautiful and provides great shade where it is really needed. We don't want to cut it down if it poses no threat to our foundation.
How close may a tulip poplar be to a house and not pose the threat of root damage to the slab foundation?
"Liriodendron tulipifera - tulip poplar: Big with a capital B. Fast growing, attractive, native tree - but don't use it as a street tree or plant it 10 feet away from your house. Not particularly strong-wooded. Large, tulip-like flowers are among the prettiest of all tree flowers. Not tolerant of construction damage, and large beat-up tulip poplars left standing near a new home should be regarded as hazards, not assets."
I'd personnaly recommend more like 15-20' as the average root size for a tree covers its umbrella (size of upper foliage). If you don't have a depth foundation (ie. no basement) you should be alright, but I'd watch closely as you could have problems down the road.

80's toy small flower pot with tulip and fairy is inside after water poured in side of pot, what is this toy?
I had this toy when I was little. I'm thinking mid 80's. It was a small flower pot with a tulip in it. there was a tiny hole in the side of the pot next to the tulip and when you poured water into it the flower woudl magically rise and open up and inside there was a tiny little fairy that could be removed and played with. i really need to know that name of this toy so I can at least find a picture of it, I'd really like to buy the toy itself. It helped my little cousin through the death of her mother back then and I want to buy her one now that we're grown. thanks.

Blue tulip/ Mendel theory of heredity, Genetic Questions?
1. At the present time, there is no suck thing as an all-blue tulip. The first one found will be quite valuable. How might a breeder increase the chances of finding a blue tulip?
2. Before Mendel, the chief theory of heredity was "blood-line inheritance." According to this theory, the parents' traits are blended in the offspring, just as two liquids blend when mixed together. Mendel's theory rested on the idea that traits are transmitted by particles (genes) and do not blend. Give evidence in support of the older theory. Then show how the results of Mendel's experiments fail to fit that theory.
Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated!
Blue tulip/ Mendel theory of heredity, Genetic Questions?
1. I can give a cool website where you try and make a "black tulip"..its actually quite tricky and takes me a while to do it, but once you see the "genotpes" shown as colours, its easier.
2. I guess the one that jumps to mind in concomplete dominance where you do get a mixing of parental characters eg red = RR, white = rr and Rr=pink
Also multiple alleles that factor in like skin colour where many alleles contribute and you can get a range anywhere in bwt the parental characters
Basically anything that is NOT controlled by complete dominance. Mendel was lucky ( or clever or both) in that the traits he chose were complete dominance where you show either the dominant or recessive trait. eg round or wrinkled seeds, tall or short......so 3 genotypes and TWO phenotypes
Reply:I can definately answer question 2 for you!
- The older theory is correct in the sense that the parents "bloodlines" do mix like two liquids that blend. Take for example a white rose and a red one- When you put them together, using the older theory, every single one of their offspring would be pink.
While Mendel proved that red roses and white roses do make pink roses, he further proved that not all their offspring would be pink thus discrediting the older theory.
Genes (or genetic particles) do play a part. Mendel discovered that when crossing a red rose with a white rose only 50% of the offspring would be pink while 25% would be white and 25% red.
While this is just a basic example (Mendel actually used pea plants and fruit flies) it illustrates Mendels theory and 1:2:1 ratio.
